We moved to Central Florida in 2021 and I love it here because we’re outside all year round. I miss some things from gardening in our house in Connecticut on Long Island Sound. No more peonies. Hydrangeas are hit and miss and very short-lived. A different type of tomato thrives here and the growing season is totally backwards, but longer! We plant them in September and have them through May. The summer is just too hot for almost any type of tomato, except maybe cherries.
When we lived up north, I especially liked hydrangeas because when I cut them back, every room was filled with flowers. Nearly all year round because the fall cuttings would dry and become even more robust in their colors.
That’s why I’m designing around hydrangeas and this is the first go at it. It’s a porcelain plate that I threw on the wheel and then stretched like slab to make an oblong shape. I hand-carved the stamps and used a blend of underglazes and rutile and copper wash to color them.
Will keep working on this theme!
